What Are Peptides?
Peptides are small proteins made up of amino acids. They typically contain between 2 and 50 amino acids joined together in a chain. Your body produces many different peptides naturally, where they act as chemical messengers and carry out important biological functions.
Research peptides are synthetic versions of these naturally occurring compounds. Scientists create them in laboratories to match the exact structure of peptides found in nature. This allows researchers to study how specific peptides work and what effects they have on cells and tissues.
What makes peptides different from proteins?
The main difference is size. Proteins contain 50 or more amino acids, while peptides have fewer than 50. This smaller size means peptides can often pass through cell membranes more easily, making them useful for many types of research.
What do scientists study with peptides?
Research peptides help scientists understand a wide range of biological processes:
Cell signalling – How cells communicate with each other
Tissue repair – How damaged tissues heal and regenerate
Metabolism – How the body processes energy and nutrients
Hormone function – How chemical messengers regulate body systems
Immune response – How the body defends against threats
How are research peptides made?
Quality research peptides are manufactured using solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS). This process builds the amino acid chain one unit at a time, creating a precise copy of the target peptide. After synthesis, each batch undergoes testing to confirm its identity and purity.
At UK Peptide Shop, all our peptides are made in facilities that follow Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards. Each batch comes with a Certificate of Analysis from an independent laboratory, so you know exactly what you're getting.
Frequently asked questions
Are peptides legal to buy in the UK?
Yes, research peptides are legal to purchase in the UK. They are not classified as controlled substances under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 or the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016.However, peptides are not licensed medicines and are not approved for human consumption. In the UK, they can only be legally sold for research, laboratory, and in-vitro testing purposes. All peptides from UK Peptide Shop are sold under these conditions. If you're conducting research at a university, laboratory, or other institution, you may need to follow your organisation's procurement guidelines.
How should I store peptides?
Proper storage is essential for maintaining peptide stability. Here's what you need to know:
Lyophilised (powder) peptides:
- Store in a freezer at -20°C for maximum shelf life
- Keep away from light and moisture- Peptides stored correctly can remain stable for 24 months or longer
- Do not open the vial until you're ready to use the contents
Reconstituted (mixed) peptides:
- Store in a refrigerator at 2-8°C- Most reconstituted peptides remain stable for 3-4 weeks- Avoid repeated freeze
-thaw cycles as this can cause degradation
- Use bacteriostatic water rather than sterile water if you need longer storage after mixing
- Always check the specific storage recommendations on your product's Certificate of Analysis.
Do you provide Certificates of Analysis?
Yes, every batch we sell comes with a Certificate of Analysis (COA) from an independent third-party laboratory. Each COA includes:
- The peptide name and batch number- Purity percentage (typically 99% or higher)
- Testing method used (HPLC and/or mass spectrometry)- Date of analysis
- Laboratory identification
If you need a COA for a specific batch number, contact our customer service team and we'll send it to you.

How do I reconstitute peptides?
Reconstituting peptides is straightforward if you follow these steps:
1. Gather your supplies – You'll need bacteriostatic water (or sterile water), an appropriate syringe, and alcohol swabs.
2. Let both vials reach room temperature – Remove the peptide and bacteriostatic water from the fridge or freezer. Wait 15-20 minutes before mixing.
3. Clean the vial tops – Wipe both rubber stoppers with an alcohol swab and let them dry.
4. Add the water slowly – Draw the required amount of bacteriostatic water into your syringe. Insert the needle into the peptide vial and release the water slowly down the inside wall of the vial. Do not spray directly onto the powder.
5. Let it dissolve naturally – The powder should dissolve within a few minutes. You can gently roll the vial between your palms, but do not shake it vigorously.
6. Store correctly – Once mixed, store the vial in your refrigerator at 2-8°C.
Each product page includes specific reconstitution guidelines, including recommended water volumes and storage times. If you're unsure, contact us before mixing.
